Ramadan: suhoor and iftar times

During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset. The prayer timetable tells you exactly when the fast begins and ends.

When does the fast start?

The fast starts at Fajr. Stop eating and drinking when Fajr time begins. The pre-dawn meal before this is called suhoor. Many people finish 10 minutes before Fajr to be safe.

When does the fast end?

The fast ends at Maghrib, which is sunset. Breaking the fast is called iftar. It is sunnah to break your fast quickly once the sun has set, traditionally with dates and water.

ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ Dhahabaẓ-ẓama’u wabtallatil-‘urūqu wa thabatal-ajru in shā’ Allāh. “The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is confirmed, if Allah wills.” — said by the Prophet ﷺ when breaking his fast.

Who does not need to fast?

Children, people who are ill, travellers, the elderly who cannot fast, and women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or menstruating may be excused. Some of them make up the days later or give food to the poor (fidyah). Ask your local imam about your situation.
